1st scholarship for overseas students

Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 26 (By Wu Qingcai) -

Beijing Municipal Commission of Education announced on Dec. 23rd that the government would appropriate 30 million yuan (US$3.7 million) as scholarship for overseas students and experts.

This is the first time that a local Chinese government set up such a government scholarship. During the first year of this scholarship scheme, Beijing will provide 30 million yuan as launch fund from municipal finance and the fund will be added depending on the number of overseas students.

The scholarship also encourages donation and sponsorship of friends, enterprises and communities from home and abroad. This scholarship scheme can be divided into several grades based on educational levels and the amount of tuition fees.

Overseas postgraduate students for doctorate will get around 40,000 yuan (5,000 U.S. dollars) per year, postgraduates will receive some 30,000 yuan (3,750 U.S. dollars) per year, while undergraduates and senior scholars undergoing further education can get 20,000 yuan (2,500 U.S. dollars) annually.

This scholarship scheme would mainly cover tuition fees for overseas students, experts and foreign students studying in Beijing. Applicants for this scholarship should have outstanding academic performance.

Those who have obtained scholarship from the Chinese government or other parties are ineligible for this scholarship, and overseas students studying for degrees have to apply for the scholarship year by year. At present, 66 universities and institutes in Beijing are qualified for enrolling foreign students, and each year 40,000 foreign students will come to study in Beijing.

The number of home countries of Beijing's foreign students has increased from 142 five years ago to 172. Beijing has received over 156,000 overseas students by now.
